Each summer, children have the unique opportunity to attend Trooper Island Camp, a remarkable program hosted by the Kentucky State Police. Nestled in the picturesque hills of southern Kentucky on Dale Hollow Lake, the camp provides a blend of exciting activities, personal growth, and valuable life skills, ensuring every camper enjoys a memorable and impactful experience. From mastering archery and kayaking to building teamwork through recreation and swimming, the camp’s diverse offerings cater to all interests and skill levels.
Trooper Island has been a cherished partner of the Unbridled Charitable Foundation for many years, first introduced by board member Rodney Brewer during his tenure as Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police. Rodney’s introduction of Trooper Island to Unbridled has created a lasting relationship exemplifying the type of impactful organizations Unbridled seeks to support.
Trooper Island: Where Fun Meets Learning
At Trooper Island, campers explore numerous activities designed to enhance their physical abilities, teamwork, and personal development. The archery program introduces young campers to target shooting, emphasizing range safety, equipment care, and friendly competition. For those drawn to water activities, swimming classes range from beginner sessions—focusing on basic water safety and comfort—to advanced classes that refine swimming techniques such as breaststroke and butterfly, all while incorporating engaging water games.
Kayaking classes introduce campers to paddling, balance, and water safety, allowing them to fully appreciate the serene beauty of the lake. Fishing enthusiasts learn essential techniques, from baiting a hook to safely removing their catch. Additionally, campers participate in classes on firearm safety at the camp’s supervised range.
Beyond these skill-based classes, the camp fosters camaraderie and leadership through recreational games that build teamwork and sportsmanship. Trooper Island’s mission extends beyond fun—it is dedicated to positively influencing children, helping them gain confidence, form lasting friendships, and develop a sense of responsibility in a safe and nurturing environment.
With a rich history, Trooper Island has served over 10,000 children, and remarkably, more than 60 of these campers have gone on to become Kentucky state troopers, one achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. The camp provides positive exposure to law enforcement, allowing state troopers to mentor and deeply impact children’s lives—relationships that often continue throughout the year.
Trooper Island’s partnership with Unbridled has been mutually beneficial. For several years, Trooper Island has generously donated Bald Eagle Sightseeing trips and weekend stays at the camp for Unbridled’s silent auctions, consistently popular among auction participants.
