Sponsor Spotlight: The Galt House Hotel

Since 2012, the Unbridled Eve Derby Gala has taken place at the Galt House Hotel, Louisville’s only hotel on the Ohio River and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. What began as a client-vendor arrangement has developed into a long-standing working relationship that has helped shape the Gala experience over the years.

The Galt House serves as both the event venue and the hospitality hub for the Gala weekend. The Grand Ballroom has hosted a decade of memorable evenings, while our VIP guests, celebrities, and performers have stayed onsite, enjoying the convenience and comfort of one of Kentucky’s largest hotels.

The Galt House Hotel, established in 1972 as part of Louisville’s Riverfront Urban Renewal Project, is the official hotel of Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Oaks. With 25 stories and more than 1,300 guest rooms, it offers a wide range of amenities including six restaurants, two ballrooms, over 130,000 square feet of meeting space, a spa, retail shops, and a three-story glass-enclosed Conservatory connecting the East and West Towers. The East Tower, added in 1984, includes suites with river views and extended-stay options.

The hotel’s name pays homage to two earlier historic Galt House hotels. The original opened in 1835 at Second and Main streets and was once considered Louisville’s finest. It welcomed notable guests such as Charles Dickens and served as a site for Union military meetings during the Civil War. After being destroyed by fire in 1865, a second Galt House opened in 1869 and remained a focal point of the city’s social life into the early 20th century.

In addition to being a valued venue and lodging partner, the Galt House has contributed to the Unbridled Charitable Foundation through sponsorship and donations to our silent auction. Their support has played a meaningful role in the growth and success of the Gala.

We recognize and appreciate the long history we have shared with the Galt House Hotel and thank them for their continued partnership.

From Velvet Cushions to Velvet Grit: The Unbreakable Journey of Dr. Laverne Cox

Dr. LaVerne Cox is a fervent Unbridled supporter and has been there since the beginning.  LaVerne has been overseeing Unbridled’s VIP gift bags for years and embodies what Unbridled is about.  Laverne’s life reads like a novel you can’t put down.  Equal parts grit, brilliance, heartbreak, and divine purpose.

She was born on Mother’s Day, abandoned three months later, and adopted by a minister and his wife who had saved for five years to bring her home. Her life from there was anything but conventional. Married at 14, she’d skip grades in school and grow up surrounded by faith, classical literature, and an unrelenting drive to learn.

Despite early detours, Laverne returned to her education with fierce determination. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Louisville at the age of 30, followed by a master’s and a doctorate- supported by coursework from UK and UofL. Along the way, she raised children, worked multiple jobs, and pulled her home out of foreclosure.

“I got through because people believed in me,” she said. Mentors stepped in. Doors opened. And she never wasted a single opportunity.

Her career spans clinical psychology, military consulting at the War College, mental health EAP work for Ford, and developing the crisis intervention program for Louisville’s police. She helped launch sister cities programming with Ghana. She modeled fashion before she could afford it. She’s taught college courses, worked in lumber mills, and founded her own behavioral health firm. “People think I’ve been on a velvet cushion all my life,” she says. “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Faith grounds her. “When I listen to God, I don’t go wrong. When I think I know better, that’s when I screw up.” Her understanding of grace, shaped by a childhood steeped in church and a lifetime of being underestimated, colors every relationship she touches.

Dr. Cox sees value in everyone. She recalls doing family therapy in Eastern Kentucky, a Black woman walking into hollow after hollow. “They had never seen someone like me,” she says. “But I carried a UK briefcase, and they loved them some UK.” She learned the power of grandmothers in Appalachian family dynamics. She witnessed both poverty and dignity, lessons she never forgot.

And when it comes to Unbridled, she sees something rare. “It’s egalitarian,” she says. “Nobody asks where you come from. You just roll up your sleeves and do the work. And everybody matters.”

In a world that often measures people by money or pedigree, LaVerne is a living reminder that what truly matters is character, resilience, and the courage to keep going, even when the lights are off and you’re fighting to save your home.

“I’ve made so many mistakes,” she says. “But I’m still here. And I know that’s because God had a purpose for me. I’ve been tremendously blessed.” It is people like LaVerne Cox that make Unbridled special.  And Unbridled is blessed to have her be a part of our journey.

Churchill Mae: Tammy York Day’s Next Bold Chapter

After a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, Tammy York-Day has launched a new venture that blends her deep philanthropic roots with her unparalleled eye for elegance and style. Best known for her leadership at Delta Dental of Kentucky and, more recently, her transformative five-year tenure as CEO of the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council, Tammy has long been a force in both business and giving back.

She’s also the co-founder of the Unbridled Charitable Foundation, which has raised over $5 million for charitable causes through spectacular, star-studded events like the Unbridled Eve Derby Gala. Now, Tammy is channeling that same energy, flair, and mission-driven spirit into a luxury lifestyle brand: Churchill Mae

The Passion Behind the Brand

Churchill Mae is not just a business; it’s the manifestation of Tammy’s lifelong love for discovery and storytelling through objects. Whether it’s unearthing a vintage Chanel handbag at a yard sale or sourcing artisan-crafted home goods, Tammy relishes the thrill of the hunt and the joy of transforming “finds” into meaningful “treasures” for others.

Churchill Mae curates an eclectic, elevated collection of timeless fashion, handcrafted accessories, heirloom-quality furniture, and original artworks. Every piece is hand-selected, with a story waiting to be shared. Tammy is joined by a small but mighty team who help source, list, and sell these treasures on platforms like Poshmark, eBay, Depop, and—most notably—her own online boutique: ChurchillMae.com

What’s in a Name?

The name Churchill Mae is a nod to two larger-than-life figures who reflect the brand’s dual spirit of boldness and grace: Winston Churchill and Mae West. Churchill evokes wisdom, resilience, and leadership—while Mae West brings a wink of glamor, audacity, and timeless style. Together, they form a brand persona that is fearless, fun, and full of character—much like Tammy herself.

A Business With Heart

Tammy hasn’t stepped away from her philanthropic mission—she’s just found a new way to extend it. Purchases made through ChurchillMae.com will contribute 20% of proceeds directly to the Unbridled Charitable Foundation. It’s a meaningful way for supporters to own something beautiful while giving back to a cause that has touched thousands of lives.

Whether you’re looking to elevate your wardrobe, find the perfect statement piece for your home, or support a heartfelt mission, Churchill Mae is a destination worth exploring.

The Big News: A Historic Shift for the 2026 Running of the Oaks, and a Bold New Chapter for Unbridled Eve

If you haven’t yet heard, a major change is coming to one of Louisville’s most beloved traditions. Churchill Downs has officially announced that the 2026 Longines Kentucky Oaks will be run at 8:40 PM, marking a significant shift from the traditional post time of 5:51 PM. The reason? To elevate the Oaks to prime-time national television coverage on NBC. This move reflects the growing prestige and visibility of this iconic race.

While this change opens exciting new doors for the Oaks and enhances Louisville’s national profile, it will also have ripple effects, particularly for evening events like the Unbridled Eve Derby Gala, other galas, and the local restaurant industry. However, rather than viewing this as a disruption, the Unbridled team sees a unique opportunity to evolve.

Rethinking the Rhythm of the Night

For years, Unbridled Eve has offered guests a classic experience, including a glamorous sit-down dinner followed by world-class entertainment, celebrity appearances, and dancing into the night, all perfectly timed to follow a full day at the track. With the Oaks starting later and with traffic folks not who choose to stay for the Oaks will be arriving just as Unbridled traditionally kicks into high gear.

Instead of continuing on with  the previous schedule and logistics, we are excited to reimagine the flow of the evening. Part 1 would be for the folks who choose to not attend Oaks and choose to attend Unbridled Eve early evening and watch it there.  Food would still be served, but not necessarily a timed sit-down dinner. Part 2 could be  guests arriving energized from the track under the stars, stepping into an even more elevated and immersive later night Unbridled experience, one that builds momentum from the moment they walk through the doors. While the sit-down dinner format may evolve, the elegance, purpose, and spirit of Unbridled will remain intact and stronger than ever.

A Catalyst for Creativity and Community

The local restaurant community has raised understandable concerns about the shift in dining patterns. This has historically been one of the biggest nights of the year. However, we believe there is room for innovation. New ideas such as pop-up collaborations, late-night tastings, or special pre-Oaks brunches and lunches could help rebalance the evening’s economic landscape.

As one of our major supporters recently said, “We need to lean into the change.” That is exactly what we intend to do.

A New Kind of Celebration

Our team has already begun connecting with stakeholders, sponsors, and long-time supporters. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. There is a shared belief that Unbridled Eve can evolve into something even more spectacular, a celebration that not only adapts to the new schedule but thrives within it.

In the coming weeks, we will share more details about how the evening will unfold and how Unbridled will continue to lead the way in creating unforgettable Derby experiences.

The year 2026 marks a new era, not only for the Oaks but also for Unbridled Eve, the Louisville hospitality scene, and the entire Derby Week experience. We are not simply adjusting to change — we are helping to shape what comes next.

Stay tuned. The best is yet to come.

Beyond Summer Fun: The Impact of Trooper Island

Each summer, children have the unique opportunity to attend Trooper Island Camp, a remarkable program hosted by the Kentucky State Police. Nestled in the picturesque hills of southern Kentucky on Dale Hollow Lake, the camp provides a blend of exciting activities, personal growth, and valuable life skills, ensuring every camper enjoys a memorable and impactful experience. From mastering archery and kayaking to building teamwork through recreation and swimming, the camp’s diverse offerings cater to all interests and skill levels.

Trooper Island has been a cherished partner of the Unbridled Charitable Foundation for many years, first introduced by board member Rodney Brewer during his tenure as Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police. Rodney’s introduction of Trooper Island to Unbridled has created a lasting relationship exemplifying the type of impactful organizations Unbridled seeks to support.

Trooper Island: Where Fun Meets Learning

At Trooper Island, campers explore numerous activities designed to enhance their physical abilities, teamwork, and personal development. The archery program introduces young campers to target shooting, emphasizing range safety, equipment care, and friendly competition. For those drawn to water activities, swimming classes range from beginner sessions—focusing on basic water safety and comfort—to advanced classes that refine swimming techniques such as breaststroke and butterfly, all while incorporating engaging water games.

Kayaking classes introduce campers to paddling, balance, and water safety, allowing them to fully appreciate the serene beauty of the lake. Fishing enthusiasts learn essential techniques, from baiting a hook to safely removing their catch. Additionally, campers participate in classes on firearm safety at the camp’s supervised range.

Beyond these skill-based classes, the camp fosters camaraderie and leadership through recreational games that build teamwork and sportsmanship. Trooper Island’s mission extends beyond fun—it is dedicated to positively influencing children, helping them gain confidence, form lasting friendships, and develop a sense of responsibility in a safe and nurturing environment.

With a rich history, Trooper Island has served over 10,000 children, and remarkably, more than 60 of these campers have gone on to become Kentucky state troopers, one achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. The camp provides positive exposure to law enforcement, allowing state troopers to mentor and deeply impact children’s lives—relationships that often continue throughout the year.

Trooper Island’s partnership with Unbridled has been mutually beneficial. For several years, Trooper Island has generously donated Bald Eagle Sightseeing trips and weekend stays at the camp for Unbridled’s silent auctions, consistently popular among auction participants.

Warren Moon: A Hall of Fame Heart in the Unbridled Family

The Unbridled family has some supporters whose commitment goes back even before the first Unbridled Eve Derby Gala, to the days when Tammy York Day and Tonya York were chairing the Julep Ball. Among those special individuals is NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon, whose presence has always embodied what Unbridled stands for: generosity, community, and heartfelt celebration.

Warren has been a cherished part of the Unbridled community from the very beginning. His commitment runs deeper than appearances. Year after year, Warren contributes incredible experiences to our Silent Auction, creating unforgettable moments for attendees and raising vital funds for our charitable initiatives. But his generosity is matched only by his legendary legacy on the field.

A Trailblazer in the Pocket

Warren Moon made history as the first African American quarterback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. It was a moment that honored not only his talent but also the barriers he helped break.

Before stepping into the NFL, Moon dominated the Canadian Football League (CFL), leading the Edmonton Eskimos to five consecutive Grey Cup championships (1978–1982). Once in the NFL, he redefined what it meant to be a franchise quarterback. Over 17 NFL seasons, Moon:

  • Passed for 49,325 yards
  • Threw 291 touchdown passes
  • Was selected to the Pro Bowl 9 times
  • Led the league in passing yards twice (1990 and 1991)
  • Became the first undrafted quarterback to be enshrined in Canton

Most famously, he led the Houston Oilers’ high-octane “Run and Shoot” offense, setting records and pushing boundaries for quarterbacks of the future.

Brothers in Arms: Supporting the Next Generation

Off the field, Warren continues to lead with purpose. He is a co-founder of Brothers in Arms, a Houston-based nonprofit established alongside fellow football legends Andre Ware and Vince Young. The initiative provides college scholarships to student-athletes from single-parent homes, reflecting the founders’ shared upbringing and commitment to giving back.

Brothers in Arms focuses on helping high school seniors in the Greater Houston area who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and community service. Through annual scholarships and events such as its celebrity golf tournament, the organization empowers the next generation with access to educational opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

This work mirrors the values that make Warren so special to the Unbridled family: a belief in lifting others, investing in the future, and using your platform for good.

Legacy in Motion

Even in retirement, Warren remains a guiding force in football. He mentors rising stars like C.J. Stroud and Cam Ward, offering not just tactical advice but wisdom forged over years of perseverance and grace under pressure. His recent appearance at the Tennessee Titans’ draft ceremony, where he passed his iconic retired No. 1 jersey to the team’s new quarterback, was a powerful symbol of leadership and legacy — a true passing of the torch.

Forever Unbridled

At Unbridled, we’re honored to count Warren not just as a guest or supporter, but as family. His loyalty, warmth, and legendary smile are as much a part of Derby weekend as the hats and horses. He’s not just a football icon. He’s a philanthropist, a mentor, and a friend who shows up year after year with grace and generosity.

Thank you, Warren, for always showing up, and for showing us what it means to lead with heart.
